I recently had my first adult ‘barbershop moment’. I’d previously assumed this was a cultural thing, and I’d only have these moments in black barbershops, but this one was in a hipstery spot seemingly staffed exclusively by white males.
A barbershop moment is when you instantly find yourself in open, excessive, conversation and camaraderie with someone you don’t even know. It generally only happens when the crew at a shop are talking amongst themselves, and with clients, all at once.
Think of it as an ad hoc community, with an organized core kicking it off.
Before this recent experience, I hadn’t had a real barbershop moment since I was about 17, when an entire room full of people discussed the deaths of Sam Cooke and Marvin Gaye. While cutting hair / having hair cut.
More than a decade later, a rousing conversation about online dating, the ethics of being the other man, and whether or not a balding dude should have a fade, reintroduced me to that instant, effortless sense of home.
It’s kinda nice to know that it’s not just a black thing, first hand.@8 months ago with 9 notes
