attention industry: internet privilege. →
[I’m always uncomfortable writing about privilege as a concept, in large part because I’m a straight, middle class male, and therefore likely have a blind spot to some of the role privilege plays in my own life. But, I do feel that this needs to be said.]
I’ve been getting angry as I listen to…
My advice to anyone, anywhere, who does anything: hang out with more feminists. not ‘I agree with feminism as a concept’, but like, people who think and talk and work with a lens of feminist theory as part of their point of view - this is probably the largest and most openly critical group of people who train themselves to spot the bias that is often hard to spot. Spending time with them will help you see the bias you aren’t seeing in everything, not just gender, or race, but pretty much anything.
I could say hang out with more rational skeptics, or more people who accurately see failings in how are society works, but no one walks around identifying themselves that way. You probably know someone smart who self-identifies as a feminist. Talk to them about stuff. You’ll start seeing things a bit differently, assuming a minimum of open-mindedness.
