the worst advice is to write how people talk. real conversation isn’t interesting. throwing in pauses and repetition and uh, um, delaying syllables doesn’t make writing realistic.
realistic is bullshit.
crafting a character is like everything else. feeling true and real and relatable is more important that being accurate. write to the idealised self that readers / viewers would like to think reflects how they talk.
no one is as smooth and eloquent as they would like to think. write to the way they would like to they they speak. similarly, if you are selling something, remember that you are selling it not to the real person, but to the idealised self they want to project.
people don’t buy things because they inherent fit the identity of the purchaser. people buy things because they would like to be the kind of person who owns those things.
