everything is a system.
and the problem with instinctively trying to look at forests instead of trees is it keeps me from being too driven by shifting moods. when i feel dissatisfied, when i feel a strong motivation to change, it fights against the rational voice in my head that reminds me i tend to feel this way on a 3-6 month cycle, depending on what elements of the work / recharge / socialize triumvirate i’ve...

Humble proposition.
You should need to confirm that you’ve got a decent understanding of the how and why of co-optation of cultures applies to the modern North American reality, before you can write pop-culture reviews. The culture of others is made fashion. The side effect of this is to declare a culture, and related identity, disposable, as all fashion is. So, when a pop star adopts a religion, or a...

i may have actually decided to write something...
that i should have written already. a specific overlapping of who i am, what i do, and the obvious / not-so-obvious connection of the two. it’ll probably be a presentation, the more i think of it. but yeah. feels sorta like a cards on the table kinda moment in the making. hint: it’ll deal with the concept of post-racial spaces, and decline of post-identity spaces in online culture. ...

The weirdest thing is the response logical action...
You let me know, in no uncertain terms, that I ruin your dynamic by turning idle observations into active analysis of behaviour. And then you try to discourage me when I suggest maybe I should go? The motivations, the decisions, the self destructive actions, I get all that. But I’ll never understand the way people lie to themselves about what they want, and who they are. I will never...

Aside.
Tonight I read some comics, ate dinner, cooked a random side dish as an experiment (and tossed it in the fridge uneaten), and finally trimmed my hair. I’m finally learning the difference between boredom and downtime, I think.

attention industry: On QR Codes. →
attentionindustry: QR codes are a sloppy hack. By which I mean, QR codes attempt to confront the serious issue of building a digital experience that interacts directly with physical reality, and valiantly fail. (I do not like QR codes.) The most common use of QR codes is to kick to a URL. Letting people do this…

new ideas or nothingness.
That’s the option we’re talking about. I work one of two ways - either I feed my brain, or I rush headlong into oblivion. As I move into an other intensive phase of focusing on feeding my brain, I realize it inherently means doing things that don’t feed my brain, like drinking myself into a comfortable numbness, or watching a ton of less-than-challenging tv, or actively TRYING...

attention industry: Feeds, and Frequency over... →
attentionindustry: Dumb feeds are rewriting Sturgeon’s Law, and not in a good way. Let’s go back a step. Feeds generally fall into two categories: smart and dumb. conflict with the idealized self.
One small example of how my idealized self conflicts with the actual self: I like video games. Preferably Super Nintendo era or earlier, because I haven’t developed a meaningful skill set for playing more recent games. That said, I love everything else about the medium - learning about game mechanics, how character is built and developed, the immersive story, concept art, soundtracks, spin...

Physical goods are a drag.
The idea of needing space to accumulate data, in the form of books, comics, music, etc, is so antiquated it drives me crazy. And yet, at the same time, I always want to buy new / more clothing, and random consumer goods (today, I specifically want a new bag, a PS3 [i prefer the controller form factor, i know they fail as security], a macbook air, new shoes, and glasses) I’m somehow an...

The Three Stages of Web Interface Upgrades:
Bitch endlessly about how much you liked it before. Actually use the fucking thing, now that you’ve decided you hate it. Forget about the previous version within a week. [To be repeated every time Tumblr, Facebook, Twitter, etc upgrades the interface, until we all hate one another.]

– XKCD (via thewalden) as a culture, we need to remember the universe beyond the world. because, as much as the earth has to be enough, it can never be enough. the moment we can see the horizon is the moment we begin to think only of stopping.
