I'm conducting coffee shop buddy tryouts.
If you are a regular buddy who wants to be a coffee shop buddy, or not a buddy at all who would like to be considered as a potential buddy of the coffee shop variety, shoot an email to joncrowley+coffee@gmail.com explaining why you are worth spending time with*. *yes, even those of you who are already my friends. I’m ridiculous, you knew this already.

attentionindustry: In a recent post, I argued that Twitter wasn’t a social network; it is a communications platform. That the minds behind Twitter didn’t understand that their initial actions were moving them away from network or destination status, or didn’t care, is quickly becoming the tragedy. Twitter is making… Reblogging my own post, after correcting an obvious spelling error in...

wilwheaton: There is only one thing that could be totally game-changing for Apple’s main business, iOS devices, at this point: total freedom from the carriers. The only way to ensure this is for Apple to create its own carrier. A carrier that serves iOS devices with an always-on data connection that allows them to take advantage of their features in a way that the current carrier system never...

A small but powerful realization.
The attitude is becoming better known than the ideas. This wasn’t entirely unexpected. The ideas are complex. The attitude is relatively simple to understand, and even easier to misunderstand. The decision to avoid reining myself in, and be polarizing wasn’t a hard one. I firmly believe that something that cannot be disliked intensely, cannot be deeply appreciated.  All of that...

attention industry: _____ is not a social network. →
attentionindustry: I got in a small debate on Twitter when I said I didn’t like LinkedIn, specifically because I thought marketing itself as a social network was disingenuous. We could get into a deeper debate on that, and I did, repeatedly. I think LinkedIn has some social features, but it’s laser focus on… Sometimes semantics are important.

Nights in.
I’d forgotten how much it can mean to stay home and just be. To just absorb and relax and learn. Rather than exert myself to build connections, I’m focusing again on building myself. It’s been too long. I don’t do split focus well enough. Either full bore network development, or fully committed to self-expansion. Time to learn more about me.

ROI on Homes is Zilch Over Past 35 Years →
emergentfutures: Even though the real rate of return of the U.S. national house price index was 1.3% from 1975 to 2009, the real rate of return on a typical home was below zero (–0.575%) over that period. That’s assuming a 2.5% annual depreciation rate, a 1.5%property-tax rate, a 7% mortgage interest rate, and a 25%marginal income tax rate, according to Wenli Li and Fang Yang, writing in...

On the complexity of voting.
Is voting more identity dependent than financial transactions or banking? I ask because you can only vote in person, while you can complete nearly any financial transaction online with an existing account. Voter turnout is reaching an all time low. The obvious solution would be to make voting easier. And my assumption for why that hasn’t happened, is that making voting easier removes the...
