This blog isn’t at all what it was when I started, but then again, niether am I.
Thanks for reading.
As a celebratory gesture for this non-milestone, I’d like to take requests. Anything you’d like my take on, mentioned in the comments, the ‘Ask’ box, or via email (attentionindustry@gmail.com) will be considered for response.
For clarity’s sake, considered means I’ll do it,...
I appear to be in a funk.
Looking for suggestions to counteract the effects of burnout / seasonal mopeyness / cumulative exhaustion.

Recognition that content and identity shift based on the audience it’s targeted at. I’m different variations of myself with family, with friends, and with close friends. Usually the separation available is an ‘allowed to see’ or ‘not allowed to see’ binary.

I am always exhausted. Regardless of how much sleep I get. Regardless of how I eat, or what I do each day. Something has to give.

I don't miss tumblarity,
But I miss everything else on the tumblarity dashboard: the number of posts, broken down by type, the number of words, of likes and reblogs, etc.
I don’t care at all about the algorithm that turned that useful data into a judgment of how ‘well’ I was using the system. But the raw data was nice, and counteracted the fact that google analytics can’t really track things that...

Lazy days, not watching TV
Laying in bed, listening to Drake.
I’ve stopped watching TV. Not intentionally, but I’d usually rather read and listen to music. Or screw around online. Or play with apps. Learn, react, improve.
I think this is really going to reduce the amount of hard drive space I use.
Music is for reflection. TV is for distraction. And I’ve been trying to control and/or destroy my...
I actually just went out drinking a lot.

Why I don't say I'm a feminist.
I was thinking today, that I never describe myself as a feminist, although I’ve generally agreed with the vast majority of feminist theory I’ve read.
Part of this is a discomfort with labelling myself as feminist - I’m never 100% sure I have a right (as a male) to declare my allegiance to a view that is at least partially based on not examining everything through the male gaze.
But beyond...
A MANIFESTO FOR UK INDIE COMICS IN 2010 →
If you look at the general lessons here, this applies to marketing just as well at is does comics.
Get outside your fishbowl, and note of the places the internet has developed thriving conditions for publishing - webcomics are a great microcosm to see what works online, when it comes to content, publishing, and relationships.

I’m more and more reliant on my friends. Luckily, I’ll be living with one of them come January.

I'm starting to realize
That having a tightly controlled “friends-only” section of my teenage lifejournal was probably the best social media experience I’ve ever had.
Time to go buckwild on the privacy settings for my Facebook.

Sometimes I wonder; do Americans know that is what many Canadians think, when they think of your country? Beyond all the bluster about freedom, you’re the country where you get fined $10K for not wanting to be molested by the TSA.
Then again, people have been...
I don’t really have a personal life, these days.
– I’ve said this three times this week, and JUST realized how self-pitying it sounds.
attention industry: a few thoughts on culture →
attentionindustry:
There’s a tendency to treat culture as an independent element of companies, which infuriates me. Culture is treated like something of a holy grail, a way to increase productivity, drive, and cohesion. Culture is a mixture of spirit, but also of processes and frameworks. Dictating culture from the…
Brutally Honest Day →
We spend our entire lives being polite, political, fair and friendly. For one day, just before the end of the year, be brutally, necessarily honest. No sugar coating, no dodging the question, and no white lies. For one day, I’m going to be as honest as humanly possible, and hope that the good done by it outweighs the inevitable hurt feelings. (This invite is both a request to participate,...
