Day 2 of my week of not drinking
whiskeyandgoatsmilk:
enjoyed jesse’s band very much last night at cake shop. The great thing about cake shop is that not only are they an amazing bar/venue but they have the best sandwiches, cupcakes, coffee and PG tip black tea (my favorite! and the only kind i drink at home)
Liam and I have found that soda water with bitters is also really really yummy to have.
It was nice to wake up this...

Orwell on Polanski (sort of.) :
In an age like our own, when the artist is an altogether exceptional person, he must be allowed a certain amount of irresponsibility, just as a pregnant woman is. Still, no one would say that a pregnant woman should be allowed to commit murder, nor would anyone make such a claim for the artist, however gifted. If Shakespeare returned to the earth...
Serious Question:
Um, has the Awl made Gawker seem more or less irrelevant to anyone else? No disrespect to the current crew at Gawker, but it just feels like watching Saved by the Bell: The New Class, when I could be watching Saved by the Bell: The College Years.
A reinvented version of the old classic, versus the cast I love, in an unfamiliar situation? I can’t do both forever, can I?

I don't like yelling at the television.
It’s something my mother has always done, and I don’t like it. I could come up with a lot of reasons why this is the case, some self-loathing, some over-analysed, but the long and short is, the TV can’t yell back, and I have trouble seeing that kind of catharsis as dignified.
I yelled at the television a fair bit last night.
I don’t care how talented you are. I...

Bastard Thoughts #3
The key to a good lie is to make the other person certain they’ve caught you attempting to conceal a flaw or weakness. Every game is one of arrogance versus evidence.
The fact that he had spent the night in another house, with another woman, was entirely irrelevant the second he opened his mouth, and stammered.
“The the the first dance always frightens me. I’ve been taking...

Bastard Thoughts #2
He sat on the subway, feeling the rumbles despite a serene expression and closed eyes.
“I have no control over whether or not I die alone,” he thought, “but at the very least, I can endeavor to go to bed that way as seldom as possible.”
It was only due to a mixture of natural talent and effort that she did not see the predatory glint in his eyes, as they opened.

I got asked last night, 'What is your dream job?'
I gave the most honest answer that I could, that at 25, I’m more worried about the next step than I am about the destination. I think about what experiences will take me further along my journey, careerwise, far more than I do about where I’ll end up at the end.
Part of that might be a lack of certainty, but I think part of it is also admitting to myself that the job I want might not...

Crack kills. Smoking kills. Obesity kills.
jayparkinsonmd:
If obesity is linked so closely to so many of the top 10 diseases that kill Americans, why don’t we have PSAs saying:
Obesity Kills.
Why aren’t we, as a culture, condemning obesity just as we condemn crack and smoking?

black and white comics should have a black and white cover.
In my early years as a comic reader, I felt totally betrayed every time I opened a comic and found the cover art didn’t match the actual artist. But this was in the speculation days, when shops routinely taped books shut in polybags, to ensure they didn’t get ‘ruined’ be people interested in the...
