Five Shitty Things About Me:
1) i often say ‘i’m trying to come up with a way to say…’ or ‘i want to say…’ to avoid admitting i don’t want to craft a tactful or respectful way of saying something rude / mean / hurtful.
2) i ‘warn’ people about my many weaknesses of character and negative traits, as though being able to point back to that warning somehow absolves me...

– Wesley Snipes, as Shadow Henderson, in Mo’ Better Blues.
(I was exposed to this through the Roots’ ‘Things Fall Apart’, and it is still hugely relevant. If there’s an audience, you should probably care about what they want.)
i did not take pictures of the National
but it was completely awesome, including the company.
i will always adore watching a vocalist completely immerse themselves into the song, seemingly forgetting the audience.
‘mistaken for strangers’ resulted in me feeling better than i have in some time.

sometimes i think in sentences without context.
“you didn’t grow up there. you make this claim to it, but this is the only place you’ve known.”
“i grew up there as much as i needed to. surrounded by people who have the place deep enough in their flesh that they can’t actually leave. i didn’t live there. i lived in the idea of there.”
break-up realizations (2).
i didn’t think telling people would be as difficult as it is. not telling people would come across as evasive, or in denial. they’ll find out anyway. but it’s just so awkward saying it. makes it more real.
and really, is there anything as self-indulgent as letting someone know the status of your relationship, without them asking? it’s like i put up a huge...

Come on, Tumblr. Know your people!
i’m more amazed that media isn’t an option. or anything related to communication. i understand that people who aren’t artists aren’t the target market, but comms geeks are the ppl who will obsess over a good interface, and evangelize like a mofo.
gah. (more break-up revelations.)
i’ve got this insanely long, ever expanding list in my head - the things that i didn’t know about the last time i was single. this includes: most of my favourite bands, most of my favourite TV shows, books, magazines, movies.
the years between 20 and 25 are pretty formative ones, for those things.
so i’ve been, every so often, staring into space and telling myself things like...

last night, my girlfriend of almost five years broke up with me. i’m not angry. i don’t really understand. but it was on good terms, or at least as good terms as possible in a non-mutual break up.
i feel like someone died.

The future is already here - it is just unevenly distributed.
- William Gibson
for the first time last night, this quote took on a different meaning for me. i was watching blog reactions and video clips of the Tamil protest that was, at the time, shutting down the Gardiner Expressway in both directions, and i realized: if this is an issue of distributed future, those protesting are basically...
A New Business Model for Digital Agencies →

when i complain that the future of business is being impeded by old models, what i’m saying is: i wish more people were this creative, and had the cojones to go make things happen.
catering to idealised selves.
the worst advice is to write how people talk. real conversation isn’t interesting. throwing in pauses and repetition and uh, um, delaying syllables doesn’t make writing realistic.
realistic is bullshit.
crafting a character is like everything else. feeling true and real and relatable is more important that being accurate. write to the idealised self that readers / viewers would...

to see what the tumblarity algorithm looks like. wondering if it’s heavily weighted toward time (current post / reblogs), or if it remains fairly stable.

how the fuck do i turn off the Tumblarity thing? its so fucking tacky.

the real joke is that there are people who don’t think this was always a popularity contest, layered atop a bunch of people who actually just wanted to talk.

tumblr is probably the only online service i’ve used that doesn’t piss me off every time they update / upgrade something.
semi-justified flame bait.
i have never understood the assertion that looking at attractive women, or acknowledging that you find a woman or certain type of woman attractive, or even noting that an idealized, inaccurate depiction of a woman is attractive, is somehow offensive, or at least anti-feminist.
